Microneedling Preparation & Recommended Supplies

MICRONEEDLING PREPARATION & RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES

Proper preparation is essential for a safe treatment, faster healing, and the best possible results. Please review these recommendations before your appointment.

Recommended Supplies

We recommend having the following items available before your appointment:

  • Gentle facial cleanser or Hibiclens® Skin Cleanser (if instructed by your provider)
  • Hyaluronic Acid Serum
  • Hyaluronic Acid Sheet Masks
  • SPF 50+ Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
  • Arnica Gel or Arnica Tablets (optional)
  • Hydrocortisone 1% Cream (optional)
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) (optional)
  • Clean pillowcases
  • Clean bath towels
  • Clean bed sheets

Hibiclens® Skin Cleanser

We recommend cleansing the treatment area with a gentle cleanser before your appointment. In some cases, your provider may recommend Hibiclens® Skin Cleanser before treatment.

Hibiclens® helps reduce bacteria on the skin and may lower the risk of contamination before cosmetic procedures.

Only use Hibiclens® if recommended by your provider. Avoid contact with the eyes, ears, mouth, and other sensitive areas.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most important products to use before and after microneedling.

It helps:

  • Maintain skin hydration
  • Support the skin barrier
  • Reduce dryness and tightness
  • Improve comfort during healing
  • Promote healthier-looking skin

We recommend using a fragrance-free hyaluronic acid serum as directed by your provider.

Hyaluronic Acid Sheet Masks

Hyaluronic acid sheet masks can help soothe, cool, and hydrate the skin following treatment.

Benefits include:

  • Increased hydration
  • Temporary relief from dryness and tightness
  • Cooling comfort
  • Support for the skin's natural healing process

Only use clean, fragrance-free masks approved by your provider.

Arnica (Optional)

Some patients choose to use Arnica Gel or Arnica Tablets before and after treatment to help minimize the appearance of bruising and swelling.

Please consult your healthcare provider before taking any supplement, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking blood thinners, or have medical conditions.

Hydrocortisone 1% Cream (Optional)

If mild itching develops during the healing process, your provider may recommend a 1% hydrocortisone cream for temporary relief.

Use only as directed. Do not apply to open skin unless instructed by your provider.

Tylenol® (Acetaminophen)

Some patients experience mild tenderness or discomfort after treatment.

If appropriate for you, Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) may help relieve discomfort.

Do NOT take Tylenol® if you are allergic to acetaminophen or if your physician has advised you not to use it. Always follow the dosing instructions on the product label or the guidance of your healthcare provider.

Clean Environment

For the first several days after treatment:

  • Use clean pillowcases.
  • Use clean bath towels.
  • Consider using freshly washed bed sheets.
  • Avoid allowing pets to sleep directly on your pillow during the initial healing period.
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.

Maintaining a clean environment may help reduce exposure to bacteria while your skin is healing.

Hair Preparation

Please arrive with your hair clean and secured away from the treatment area using a headband, hair tie, or clip.

This helps keep the treated skin clean and minimizes unnecessary contact with the treatment area after your procedure.

Sun Protection

Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning before your appointment.

Do not receive treatment if you have:

  • Active sunburn
  • Peeling skin from sun exposure
  • Excessive redness
  • Recently tanned skin

Following treatment, wear a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen daily and avoid prolonged direct sun exposure while your skin heals.

Hydration

Proper hydration supports healthy skin and recovery.

We recommend:

  • Drinking plenty of water before and after your appointment.
  • Keeping your skin well hydrated with a gentle moisturizer and hyaluronic acid serum.
  • Avoiding excessive alcohol for at least 24–48 hours before treatment, as it may contribute to dehydration.

Prescription Topicals & Cosmetic Treatments

Please notify your provider if you currently use or have recently used:

  • Isotretinoin (Accutane®) or similar medications
  • Tretinoin (Retin-A®)
  • Adapalene (Differin®)
  • Tazarotene
  • Hydroquinone
  • Benzoyl Peroxide
  • Prescription topical antibiotics
  • Corticosteroids
  • Prescription-strength exfoliating products
  • Any physician-prescribed skincare treatment

Also disclose if you have recently had:

  • Laser treatments
  • Laser hair removal
  • Morpheus8 or radiofrequency treatments
  • IPL
  • Chemical peels
  • Dermaplaning
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Waxing
  • Threading
  • Facials
  • Botox
  • Dermal fillers
  • PDO threads
  • PRP, PRF, Exosomes, Salmon DNA, or other skin rejuvenation procedures

Your provider will determine whether treatment should be modified or postponed to allow your skin to heal completely.

Supplements & Medications

Please notify your provider if you take medications or supplements that may increase bruising or bleeding, including:

  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®)
  • Naproxen (Aleve®)
  • Prescription blood thinners
  • Fish Oil / Omega-3 supplements
  • Vitamin E
  • Turmeric / Curcumin
  • Garlic supplements
  • Ginkgo Biloba
  • Ginseng
  • Other herbal supplements

Do not discontinue any prescription medication or blood thinner without approval from the healthcare provider who prescribed it.
